Death Stranding Sea Turtle in Padma Beach - Kuta

Thursday, 10 February 2022, Westerlaken Foundation/ Yayasan Bali Bersih received information from Pak Ngurah, an excavator operator from DLHK at Padma Beach about a dead sea turtle. Westerlaken Foundation/ Yayasan Bali Bersih sent a team to check on the reported site. We have a long standing relationship with DLHK staff who always report dead or alive turtles they find to us.

At the location, one turtle carcass was found, which after discussing with drh. Deni Rachmadani, confirmed as medium-sized Hawksbill turtle with the following specifications:

Species : Eretmochelys imbricata/ Hawksbill Turtle

Status : Critically Endangered

Gender: Female

Length/ Width : 46.5cm/ 32cm

Location of discovery: Padma Beach, Kuta. (Latitude : -8.703686, Longitude: 115.164844)

Condition: The head has been crushed and the body has decomposed

Follow-up: Buried

This finding is also the first fatal stranding Westerlaken Foundation/ Yayasan Bali Bersih handled in 2022. In 2021, we recorded a total of 38 sea turtles stranding in Bali, and most of them were dead when found.
